Dear Members,

We are exploring the possibility of extending the next MVUG meeting by starting in the afternoon into the evening, for example (3-8 pm). The reason for extending the meeting is because we would like to cover the whole VDI story with speakers from Microsoft, Quest and Citrix and to do this subject justice would require more time.

We are thinking of hosting this on Thursday the 25^th June and would be interested in hearing your feedback whether positive or negative within the next 5 days so that we can make a decision.

Hyper-V in the enterprise

Hi,

I have been trying to drive forward the concept of virtualisation in my organisation for some time now. We currently have no virtualised workloads in production. I use it for testing. We're crying out for it in production, but I want to do it right and properly. I've setup a demo lab of a virtualised Exchange 2007 server running on Hyper-V with a software iSCSI target. This works nicely and brings appreciative oohs and aahs when it is demo'd.

Nevertheless, moving this to production is a whole different propostion. When I talk to third party suppliers in the virtualisation space theying quickly default to talk about VMWare (the pound signs pop up infront of their eyes), the mention of Hyper-V usually brings an awkward silence or sharp glances between pre-sales consultants. VMotion they mutter, Quick Migration I retort, dowtime they say, Live Migration with R2 I respond...and so it goes on, and the discussion resembles a Windows v Linux debate of old when all I really want to know is how I go about coming up with a sensible plan for virtualising my infrastructure with a solution that doesn't entail spending money on software I don't need.

So, who can I talk to about virtualising with Hyper-V and understanding the real storage requirements without getting entangled with entrenched VMWare partners who want to sell me VMWare as well as a costly SAN (justifying that to the business is a whole different proposition too)? Where are the detailed technical guides for setting up such an environment in production?

What has been you experience with this? Have people got Hyper-V into production at any scale yet?

Hyper-V on a MacBook Pro

Hi everyone -

I have a shiney new MacBook Pro running Vista Ultimate 64-bit via bootcamp and was hoping to try to run Hyper-V as the base OS on it. I've used a lot of VMW*&* but am new to Hyper-V so appologies for my newbie vocab. Does anyone know if this is posisble? Hyper-V can take advantage of EFI now, right? Any note appreciated.

Hyper-V to support 24 cores

As part of the Intel Dunnington launch event (six core server processors ) Microsoft has announced today that they will be releasing an update to Hyper-V through which customers can achieve greater scalability. Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V will now be able to support upto 24 logical processors (cores) in the physical machine. In addition with this update Microsoft will allow customers to run upto 192 virtual machines on a single physical machine.

Mobile Device Manager - Supported Application List For Hyper-V

Does anyone know a reason why mobile device manager is not on the supported list of applications within hyper-v? As shown at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/hyperv-app-support.aspx seems other System Centre products are on there so I would have thought the product team must have an issue???
